There are hundreds if not thousands of sub-specialties in camera collecting. You can collect 35MM cameras, medium format cameras, Kodaks, Japanese cameras,  you name it—and you can spend a lifetime happily amassing a collection without ever straying outside the bounds of the specialty you choose.

In the not so distant past, when film was still in general use, cameras were built to last. I can personally testify to the durability and mechanical reliability of these cameras, since I still use a number of them, mostly Olympus, Nikon and Pentax, we use these cameras for a new training course which includes shooting, processing and printing..
